Our beloved hip hop music genre with its distinct rhythmic vocal style (rap) accompanied with backing beats began in the Bronx, New York City in the 1970s. Much deeper roots of the hip hop culture go all the way back to West Africa.

From reggae to funk and soul, fused by rock and disco, Jamaican dub music reinvented by the hip hop godfather DJ Kool Herc, the style has many names and accents. It's hard to define, and yet the first few beats and lines, no matter what country they come from, turn you on and you just feel it.

Gangsta rap, West Coast hip hop, East Coast hip hop, Southern rap, rapcore, old school, new school (see complete listing)... American hip-hop music has reached the cultural corridors of the globe, it has been absorbed and reinvented around the world to become a truly global phenomena.
